TS-7250 wireless hosting

Here is the TS-7250 board for my senior design project - it seems to be a great little embedded ARM board with tons of functionality. What you see here is the board linked wirelessly over the network with control from a desktop in the background (this was before I messed up the boot config file). Another fantastic thing about this board is since it is running an embedded version of linux, it also has a pretty full version of Apache running. This has made wireless interfacing as seamless as it gets for such a compact system.

One of the things I want to try and do is establish a sort of journal from my digital breadcrumbs. I have gone through several revisions of blogging software and have had some difficulty consolidating my past entries of all of the blogs. Transformed to CSS

From text saving to XML (mostly)

Finishing up

After seeing the presentations from my XML class I was pretty inspired by the projects that were presented (particularly: VoiceXML, Graph Online, ManuscriptXML, and open-document-conversion). I think that these technologies only provide a jumping board for the capabilities truly held within. On the note of VoiceXML, I want to do some research on how that might integrate with Asterisk (Open-Source PBX). The potential to have an almost completely free enterprise level phone service is pretty inspiring. What an age we are in!

Final Project Finished!

Some lessons learned: *Javascript is a great GUI prototyping tool - the ease of use and major functionality allowed for me to focus more on the XML aspect of this project. *XSLT is amazing, there is nothing better than seeing how powerful XSLT is with the translation of complex structures. *ANT is nice - after wrestling for hours with shell-scripts and batch files, it is very nuce to come to the conclusion of running one command: "./ant". Additionally the functionality provided by "./ant clean" is nice too, now the whole project can be managed from a single (very powerful) multi-platform file. *SVG is wacky - no matter how many times you try or how many different browsers you try in SVG will never display the same way twice. Therefore, it has come to my conclusion that the use of an outside standard tool is the best decision - batik was the solution for this project. *Extra Jar files make a project huge: with the inclusion of batik the project size if 6MB; with the inclusion of ANT the project is a whopping 50MB - these sizes are not ideal, but considering the functionality these packages provide, they should also be considered great tools!

Overall: This project has been a success and I cannot wait to add some more functionality to streamline the process.

Interesting info

Additionally, I wanted to share some neat aspects of how all of this project works. I am using a very neat toolkit from Bastik that allows some very powerful SVG manipulation, particularly in terms of how good the SVG looks on-screen. The toolkit also allows for the conversion from SVG to PNG, JPEG, etc. I am also using XSLT to parse the tree structure data, so the simplest information is sent between applications in a very clear fashion. A(BC) is a parent A with two leaf-children B and C - pretty impressive structure. This structure was used from an XML.com article about how to use XSLT to transform text data into anything. I am also using javascript to do some user interface stuff. This is from the fact that most of the GUI stuff that was planned in the beginning was way to heavily dependent on Java implementation, so much so I think the XML nature of this project would have been well watered down. Now...a report to finish.

Project update

So, I have found a way to get my document to SVG then output it in a standard format (PNG) all while using scripting files to use it off line - this will be automated with ANT. I am also using a java-script front end to enter all of the information and create the \'tree\' structure which is then parsed to a Hedge graph. A look at what the data has become is below.

Found this little trinket of gold on the web - automated SVG tree generation. This is a far stretch of help, considering I have been trying to use jGraph this whole time. Which, by the way is so users can change the graph, not so the out put can be pretty - like SVG. SWEET!

Final Project Update

So, I have been looking at how I am going to put all of this project together and the solution clearly lies in the XML. As a matter of fact the common thread of consistency lies in how the XML exchanges the data for the standards of this project. The Java front end (pictures coming soon) is the portion of user interface that generates the data necessary for graphical output. The middle data processing section is powered by the data structures that XML naturally conforms to (like the DOM tree for XSLT).

Final Project ideas (like everyone else...)

I have been looking for a final project to work on for my XML class. I have contemplated several ideas, ranging from the SVG/AJAX implementation to GiZMO presented by Dr. Coyle, rewriting my web page to accommodate some modern web standards - XML, PHP, RSS (which will remain a project in the works), to the Master Feed statistics package - for telling the posting information to all of the blogs listed in a sequence (kind of like a metrics page for Google Reader - I have not seen it done yet). So, I have moved on to another neat idea that can hopefully help a friend of mine. For Mock-Trial meets there is some information that is kept from the teams to try an separate the team identities. However, the natural desire - and competitive edge - is to try and decode this order. Also, the teams compete in a bracket style competition (and power matching) so it helps to see the teams one has competed with indirectly. I think this will be a fun project because the logic is fairly straight forward. I am hoping this will allow me to explore some of the fine points of polishing up this project - especially the user interface parts. I also think I will be able to use some pre-existing libraries to complete some of the more complicated aspects (such as drawing tree structures). I believe the incorporated technologies will include (many XML related): SVG, Java, Ant (for versioning and compiling all different libraries at once), XSL, CSS, XHTML, Swing, and many many more ((infomercial like)). Picture of what I will try to make the end result look like, soon to come...

So it\'s been a while, but here\'s what we got!

So, I have recently been enamored with Yahoo\'s \"Pipes\" system (Pipes.yahoo). I have compiled a list of all the blogs RSS feeds from THE website. With this, I present the Master Feed, an RSS piped feed with all of the conglomerated blog feeds. The pipes allow one to see an over-arching view of all the websites with the most up-to-date view of all student posts.
Now for the improvements to come:I want to compile statistics and display them in an SVG format. Giving a visual representation of what people are updating the most.Secondly, there could be a representation with the most popular time of day to post. C) This could be used for a reflow - to prove that content is no good unless reused an represented - like the CNN of the XML class

XML with XSL translation

Take a look at this: Catalog.xmlIt is an XML file with XSL translation that will translate in the browser. Although, this may not be the best way to transfer XML data it is very interesting that the translation from "raw" data can occur with minimal "compilation".

Yahoo to Ical Converter

How difficult would it be for you to code the converter to go the opposite direction? The solution you have is great but I\'m trying to figure out a way to sync my home computer with my work - unfortunately PDA is out of the question because I use Mozilla and my work is 3 hours away over citrix so a pda can not be used at either end. I was thinking of using yahoo as the middle guy which will be perfect but I can\'t find a solution to get anything back out of ical (and for some reason outlook won\'t import ical like it\'s supposed to) Any help is appreciated.

So I am just sitting here studying on the fourth floor of the library at SMU, I look to my right...WOW! Ill get better pictures later but the details in this one tell enough...WOW. Lately I have been taking classes ranging from Philosophy to Computer Science (I might add I hate missing questions on those test that I KNOW I know inside and out) and all have been pretty interesting so far. The lectures are most of the time fascinating and well thought out. I work at the ITS help desk and get calls all day complaining about the internet being down...that has GOT to end. My residence hall has lost connection at least 5 times since I logged in. Absolutely ridiculous...but when it works it works well. I am sure that will be fixed in the years to come. More pictures are assured to come.

Ayaaaa! or it Yayyyy!?!

Sweet, so i am now an IT help person - yeah! and if there is a world out there to check it out they should definitly go to iPodHacks and look at the cool stuff you can do with the iPod including the youPod which allows you to directly back up to the iPod hardrive and not the weird Apple filing system...it gets your music back in order too! other than that, those guys over @ CodeWeavers can program like...like...well thay CAN PROGRAM - iTunes is now in linux (or more correct: iTunes is running under a windows environment in linux - again - whatev). Red Faction the game (on PS2) ROCKS!!! everyone should play it! why? because GeoMod (TM,R,C - please dont sue) is COOL!
One last thing - OSX rules now too. put fink on there and...uhhh....well...you just have a multipurpose *nix box that also runs Mac (with classic OS9 mode too) wow...that could almost be considered three OS\'s AT ONCE! and of couse why would we do such a thing??? to run stuffs like nmap.

Yeah so those JibJab dudes really make some funny stuff...ohhh the popularity. So I go interview for an IT job today...wish me luck. My laptop the other day decided to go on the fritz...wait the wireless card did, when I took it in to the Genius Bar (TM,R,C - apple dont kill me) they just pushed the antenna back into its slot - man I felt dumb. However, I did learn something interesting - apples run Open-Firmware, powered by Forth - something SUN has been doing for a while. Anyway, at start-up holding OPTION-APPLE-O-F will get you to the command line, looks a little more powerful than a BIOS, but I guess we will see.

Yahoo Calendar to iCal

So i just finished writing this neat little app that lets you export your Yahoo calendar to the iCal through the native vCal format (easy to understand). I wrote the whole thing in javascript...so the webpage can be saved and it is all a client side process. At least it makes it easy. Yahoo calendar to iCal converter
Other points of interest are bluetooth - because it is SWEET!
Some documents can swing a person either way

PPPowerbook!!!

so i got this cool 12in powerbook G4 bundled with an iPod - need i say SWEET!!!. i am most definitly in geek heaven. well now i am stuck to understanding all this stuffs (ok ok i really do enjoy it). and for something completely different - there is interesting research (and much fact) about the interactions between humans and how the lower levels of the brain actually control more of the logical and cognitive functions. although as my dad says "its complete rubbish AND garbage" as those animalistic characteristics really have no meaning whatso ever. but i maintain; what if we really are like the dog and the tail is just wagging us? (honestly - whatev)

all that jazz

(that was good movie too)...well besides more updates on site code there is some cool stuff (imagine that). i have started A+ certification and hoping it wont be all that hard (i guess time will tell). on the note of hardware it is also cheaper and more effective to build your own WiFi antenna rather than pay somebody like hawking $20 for a watered-down piece of junk (though they do make some quality stuff). the guys over at operation gadget have more cool stuff to ponder about. one of these days I will write a comment board for the photos and blog...but it will have to be later. theoretically i could just conform and use one of the nice blogging plugins that have everything to get started; but i ask where would the fun in that be? the casio exilim ex-m2 camera is sweet its tiny and fun (though i wanted the z2...stupid ebay). oh well...i need to think about some stuffs to write about. maybe later

what happend???

well what a weekend! i just ended my orientation at smu and am really excited about going. I posted some new pictures of my visit and some odd camera-phone pics. When I was at the airport I was able to get free wifi. what did i learn from that lesson? secure your computer (people left shares wide open)! so beyond that I had decided to switch to firefox (quite a while ago) and security reports all agree its better than IE (but we all knew that). themes rule! my current one is very...pretty (i guess): Plastikfox.

some cool stuff

The other day I ran across this website Deskpops.com which has a pretty neat application set up. But if you know even the smallest bit of html reverse engineering the code is fairly easy. So bitorrent is pretty neat except that it can be slow if people are jerks. Check out xandros...at least I think to check out, I am downloading right now. In other news Open Photo is a really cool place for free (as in speech) photos. There was once this old show called the Computer Chronicles man is there some neat OLD stuff on here; much of what they talk about seems to be ahead of the times...I wish they had these kinds of shows on now...ahhh how the past is always there.

::: home-brew fireworks - that is we lit them and then we ran (they sure look pretty)
so I suppose with all of the recent addition of movies there is some explanation required. well it all starts with the fun nights at my friends ranch, we decided it would be a good idea to dispose of the extra fireworks he had lying around - we had to do it with style - therefore we ended up with (on tape) a concussion bomb and some pretty technical fireworks (I say technical meaning that the instructions provided did not support a large enough explosion, so we improvised). Now from there we have the elegant RoombaVac - I will have to say this is one of the most satisfying devices ever - it just works. The floors feel cleaner the robot works when you are away and cleanup is easy, good going for the folks over at iRobot.
I was inspired to take a video of the plane landing for various reasons - one being that I have never seen a video of a plane landing posted on the web (granted I have not looked). The video of the waterfall is hard to explain, the effect is barely visible in the video but the water looks like it is trickling very slowly in sheets - it is one of the coolest things I have seen done with water (I also discovered that all they do is run water down a long screen to get this effect). And last, but most certainly not least, the monitor implosion. One day I was pondering whether a monitor would implode or explode upon a strong impact. Now rather than do internet research I figured a real life test was in order: all you need to perform this experiment is a monitor (old, unplugged, etc..etc), a heavy blunt object (ie sledgehammer, baseball bat, or in my case a heavy rake) and eye protection. I am going to neglect to explain what happened as the videos speak for that, but as far as I can tell monitors should implode-see for yourself. Man thatÂ’s some cool stuff-watch the videos.

Ceiva Digital Image Picture Frame

Man this thing is cool!
All you do is plug it in and subscribe to the service, then all you do is manage it from the web. The only problem I have is the $110 plus price tag per year! So whats the most logical solution? Put linux on it of course. I am currently working on it now. (by the way the ceiva website gives you a one day subscription)

Had a LAN party this last weekend...it went down in my garage. Now I may be biased but it was the bomb, it was like having a party outdoors all night long. You can see in the pictures we played a little Splinter Cell, UT2k4, oh and solitaire (good multiplayer game). Overall, a pretty sweet weekend, got some sweet PDA\'s at the flea market: Cassiopeia PA-2400U and a Philips Velo 500. So much fun! If you have never had the chance to go to your local library and look at the almost exessive amount of information, I highly suggest going. What I found amazing was the relativly recent information (magazines, journals, articles) published and organized. Now I find it obvious that the amound of information far supercedes this, however, it does keep recent archive of events...I think it is quite nice.

iTunes, mp3s, the sound of amazement

Well, this weekend I won a 50 dollar gift card to the on-line iTunes music store. I have thought of signing up for the service in the past but couldn\'t really stomach the idea of paying for the service, as I had not tried it...I also didn\'t know if thats how I wanted to purchase music. Now...I have tried it, and quite frankly am truly inspired...they have a comprehensive, searchable music library...wow. The songs are 99c, and though a little expensive...is cheap, regardeless. I love the service and can\'t wait to get an iPod.

A story from a friend
My friend Tim had a recent brush with a popular program: hilarity ensues "Why drill a hole in your foot with a hang ogger when you could install AOL 9.0 Instead! A tale of woe brought to you by Tim Craddock" Today started innocently enough, went to REI, cleaned my room, begun packing, and (Drumrollll) cleaned up my computer some. So naturally as part of cleaning my computer I go around changing my passwords and whatnot. As you know, for some reason beyond me, we still pay for AOL, and I still have an AOL email account that has been broken into twice and they have accused me of being the nation's worst spammer/Satan (take your pick). So anywho, I haven't myself changed my AOL password in years (though they did for me after the incidents). You cannot change your AOL password online, you have to do it through the actual AOL software, so here we go. I go to aol.com and figure, what the hell, I'm going to wipe down this computer sometime in the near future anyway, I'll install AOL 9.0, see what all the rave is about, change my password, and be more educated on the technological world around me. The misery begins. First, you download the program to download AOL (cause they couldn't just make it an executable). Once the REAL download begins it takes about 2 hours because its 60 megs (WTF MATE!). Okay, so after pissing off everyone in your neighborhood for sucking down the communal bandwidth you begin the install process. Apparently they didn't compress anything, this should go smooth, especially with all the money that AOL has to pay their programmers so shit works, right? WRONG! As you sit their you wonder, is AOL being installed on my computer or is a weasel that is high on methamphetamine chiseling away at my hard drive with his crack pipe? HOLY SHIT, IT WAS INSTALLING! So now here we go, time to start it up and log on, but in reality this is like watching molasses drip down the wall. So you are finally on, and low and behold you are accosted by about every welcome page you can think of (and you can't get rid of this shit), for example, the AOL Entertainment Welcome Page, the Black Interest Welcome page, the Latino Interest Welcome page, and the Small Business Welcome page. At this point I am thinking about going and playing in traffic, but alas, I set out on a mission to change my password, and I've come this far, so that's what I did. After closing the program (as much as you can, because there is still a little AOL thing on the toolbar that you CANNOT, I mean CANNOT, close), I begin the uninstall process. Holy shit. First, there is no uninstall under the AOL menu it puts in your programs, so you go to the control panel and what do you find, a list of 8, count them 8 programs it installed on your computer, and no good way to get all the shit off. After going through the most painful and messy uninstall of my life (ex you are uninstalling AOL, would you like to still keep the AOL update bar?) Today (or in reality yesterday) I got back into the Residence Hall and have gotten the futon moved in (it's freakin sweet). Workin on catching up on some of the tech news like Bill and Conan chattin' it up. Whatev. I really want to get some software projects started but can only keep coming back to finding a lot of better code already written (I guess i should just keep on learning). On the note of learning Joel Spolsky has some good advice for students like me. Funny how he tends to agree with the stance of my High School counselor. Although, his opinions of the SAT only being one test compared to the multitude of inputs required for a GPA are, in my (humble) opinion (IMHO), slightly skewed, I like what he has to say. And just to keep this post going, what in the heck is up with lasers, planes, and federal cases? I just really hope this isn't a serious sign that our government has/is going nuts. I mean, those terrorists might be using, "lasers to temporarily blind or distract pilots". Humm, ok...thats a good application. So lets go arrest that guy in his backyard with a laserpointer. scanning networks
ok, so I wanted to write a little how-to on sniffing around networks. There are many tools out there, but the most adaptable I found was ettercap. It is open-source, has windows binaries, and therefore works on *nix/Mac and windows fairly easily. To install: just read the 'readme' file in the ettercap download and make sure you have all of the dependencies. Then just build like any-other program (run: ./configure, run: make test) and you are done. (If you are having trouble with any of this read the info in the forums and even ask questions in there) If you don't want to compile it yourself there are windows binaries and the MacOSX binaries (note: these are not officially supported by ettercap team). To start ettercap just open a terminal and 'cd' to the ettercap directory and the './ettercap -C' the '-C' is for the curses interface. From here the usage is really straight forward. Use the arrow keys to get over to the 'Sniff' menu then start the 'Unified sniffing' option. The new screen that is brought up is the sniffing utility. Navigate to the 'Hosts' menu then select the 'Scan for Hosts' option. By doing this you are probing the network for the computers near-by and referencing them for a man-in-the-middle view. Once the hosts have been added (the screen will read 'X hosts added to the host list...') then navigate over to the 'Mitm' (man-in-the-middle) menu and choose the 'Arp poisoning...' option. It will ask for parameters, there is no need for any. Let ettercap poison the switch. (The basic premise behind Arp poisoning is to re-write the Arp (Address Resolution Protocol) into believing that your MAC (Media Access Control) address is assigned to a different IP than original. So what you will eventually see is everyone's information passing through the switch you are connected to.) Go to the 'Start' menu and choose 'Start sniffing'. Watch the information flow by at the bottom (some of the preferences of what is seen can be altered by using different plug-ins). If there is another computer available go to a website with password access, enter your info and watch ettercap capture the information. A little scary! something to ponder
as I was walking back to work today I came upon a conclusion about learning. It had to do with something my philosophy teacher said to me (it always does, those crazy's): 'Philosophers are (at least himself) are having a hard time dealing with the nature of probability in the case of causality.' (yeah yeah...stick to science) People!!!! That is science! that is the essence of string theory (or rather a part of string theory known as chaos theory). Quantum mechanics states you cannot know alot about two different things...so you can know alot about one 'quark' and nothing about another OR visa-versa (and blah...blah...blah...all the way to connecting that to Einstein's theory of special relativity). The point I am trying to make is a simple one: should we really be learning, discussing, testing theoretical physics and properties when really that is all they are is theories. The idea that we have no model for many of these theories brings me to believe that many of their foundations are not necessarily on science but rather (possibly) philosophy. Or is it that philosophy describes far in advance what we prove through science later...though there are so many philosophical theories it is hard to even know where and which to believe. But in all honesty that really kind of creeps me out. I have had my assumptions that philosophers and theoretical scientists might share some of the same dark secrets...but damn...doesn't really seem much of a coincidence. Anyways if you really want to pontificate (to speak or express opinions in a pompous or dogmatic (positive ness in assertion of opinion especially when unwarranted or arrogant) way)/philosophize with me just drop me a line (or comment). On other fronts 3 exams and 1 test to go. Writing a paper and a program now. and these guys are pretty funny from 10-12pm. Well, it has been a GREAT break, but as an english professor so phrased it, "Exams! It's our gift to you after the fall break." - to this I say "Thanks" (with much sarcasm and despise). And on this note of this fine hour, I say I am almost done with my program...yeah ok not really, but some of it is done. This break was awesome, I met back up with everyone. interesting stuff....just happens
well, I am up to some normal midnight ramblings - I think it is interesting that stuff just does happen. Today, upon my normal TV watching hour I was to tune in to 'The Screen Savers' (TSS) and upon investigating the shows website I was thrown for a loop to find that one of the hosts stated: "TSS is DEAD" (other stuff). I thought it was a good show. But, whatever is happening, and for those who know the history(s) of TechTV (ZDtv...whatever), I think 'SomeRandomGuy' has said it best: g4 doesnt want informative shows for intelligent people. They want a station that idiots will watch to see what they should like today. its the nerd version of mtv. they have shows about what they want you to like and then get millions of dollars from companies to advertise the same crap during the show about it. smart people who think for themselves are their enemy, and as you can tell from recent events, we are the minority in this country. I think more importantly what this has brought is overwhelming need for independent tech media - I see it - I want it - I am determined to make it happen. I have admired technical journalist for a while: Leo Laporte and Phillip Torrone. But maybe the best thing that has come from watching an archaic form of communication is the overwhelming need to see independent media through a new form of communication. If the public likes it they will speak if they take it and if they disapprove (just don't let a corporation get in the way) they will ignore it. I look forward to making my own world of tech, influenced by others, but certainly not created by them. I wish all those who have experienced the turmoil through a corporation good luck and a future for the better. Tate Lecture: Fareed Zakaria
Tonight Fareed Zakaria spoke at the Gregg and Molly Engles Lecture for the Tate lecture series (the same series where Al Gore and Bob Dole spoke). He had some pretty cool stuff to say that is really profound; Although, I tend to (want) to disagree that men between the ages of 15 and 25 are the reason for crime at all...However, Zakaria explained the reasons for the violence in the Middle East related to the globalization and the economy. With oil being the main income of the government in that region there is no need for the government(s) to depend on the people for money (taxes) and therefore no reason for the government(s) to give back to the people. As he put it "no taxation, no representation." And then there is no domain for the "criminal" male/person to vent their frustration with the society...except through Islam which allows for the expression of feelings and harbors a group that will respect what this person might stand for. From speaking in these forums it is easy to see how a radical extremist might develop. - well I thought it was a good logical deduction. rights or not?
So I am sitting here writing my philosophy paper and fighting over the use of a theory. The topic is affirmative action and my defense is using the moral worth of being a human to defend. I am stuck between Kantianism and Rights theory. Kantianism talks about a person being treated as an ends not just a means, but rights theory says that if someone has an intrinsic right another person cannot infringe on it. I am kind-of leaning towards Kantianism now... Although I think this might explain it better. chris @ 13:22:02

So this is what I learned
Today several interesting events took place: I learned that I can love debates and that I can dislike (to say the least) being put at an unfair disadvantage. In one of my classes today I (along with three other men in a class of a~20 women) was indirectly alluded to as being an anti-feminist, anti-Semitic, racist, uncaring and, furthermore, unresponsive person. This debate started with a discussion of images; specifically the confederate flag in South Carolina. Now, any point trying to actually defend any view of free-speech with this matter is difficult (it IS a touchy issue) there is history AND hurt involved with this flag...regardless, trying to defend a position when being cut-off and told wrong is not a productive learning environment. Secondly, images led to the issue of pornography. Again can (and many times can be derived) be a victim-crime, no sane person would disagree. But to sit-back and pit blame in a classroom environment to all of the guys that they would never understand the difference between artful nudity and pornography, only women can draw that line is awful...for an educator OR even a student. Furthermore, to start relating points that all falls under these categories from images to touching issues; end this with a frank joke about how this is like the classroom. And when refuted...to escape with the mention of " Have you not every heard of sarcasm? " To this I say Thank You! - thank you for teaching how to have an argument and never letting me argue â€“ thank you for being there when I have a question â€“ and thank you for understanding when maybe a mistake is all anything really was.
